Design for Metals
Designing for products that include metal takes a combination of material science, mechanical engineering, and metal manufacturing expertise. Using metal as a core component of a product is a fantastic option for many products. The correct metal choice can give a product a high quality feel, great structural integrity, and cost-effective manufacturing process all at the same time. Choosing the correct metal for the specific products application is an essential part of Designing for Metals. Different metals can have incredibly different features, including variable structural integrity, conductibility, or antimicrobial properties. Choosing the best metal for a product ties directly into mechanical engineering. When designing a product in CAD space, you need to be able to understand all material properties of the design to ensure weight distribution and structural integrity for the best possible end product. Engineers must take this one step further in creating a design that both achieves the purpose of the product and is cost effective to manufacture. There are countless processes to manufacture metals, but we commonly see metal stamping, CNC Milling, and sheet metal cutting.
In our 8 years of developing products, we have assembled a team of expert metal engineers. We have designed metal products from the size of a keychain to the size of a house and know the in and outs of material science, prototyping, designing in CAD, and manufacturing metals. At our in house prototyping lab located in Pasadena, CA, we have a growing portfolio of metal manufacturing equipment, including a CNC Mill, Plasma Cutting Table, ATC, and more. Tamarisk has long standing relationships with both overseas and domestic Contract Manufacturers that increase our throughput to large scale manufacturing production runs. Our CM's can stamp, weld, finish, and cut all types of metal to our exact design specification.
Why Design for Metals is important:
-
Metal can be a cost effective way to prototype or manufacture a product.
-
Metal Manufacturing comes in many different processes and making sure that your design is compatible with the most cost effective way to manufacture is important.
-
Material sourcing and research is essential in finding the best possible metal type for your product.
-
In-house prototyping tools for metal mean that our engineers can test different types of plastics and different designs quickly and improve the design quickly.
-
Metal can make a product feel professionally finished and high quality for relatively low cost.
-
When designed correctly, metal can improve the structural integrity and longevity of a product.
-
Metals can have special conductive or antimicrobial properties that can greatly benefit the effectiveness of a product.
